Krishna
The story of Radha and Krishna is among the most celebrated of all Hindu myths. The story is first found in the Bhagavata Purana, a text dated by scholars as somewhere between the fifth and 10th centuries. Their story is further elaborated in the Sanskrit devotional poem “Gitagovinda,” authored by Jayadeva, who lived in the 12th century in Eastern India³.
Radha was the wife of another gopa but was the dearest of Krishna’s consorts and his constant companion². The story of the love between the divine Krishna and the cowherder, milkmaid or gopi, Radha, his devotee, was popularized by the 12th-century Sanskrit poem, Gita Govinda¹. The 12-part epic recounts Krishna’s faithlessness and his subsequent return to Radha, and is widely understood as representing the human soul longing for reunion with the divine¹.
