The Aitareya Upanishad is one of the oldest Upanishads and belongs to the Aitareya Aranyaka of the Rigveda. It reflects the beliefs, practices and philosophical notions of the early Vedic period regarding soul, creation, birth and rebirth¹.

The second chapter of the Aitareya Upanishad describes the **triple births** of humans, or how they go through the process of rebirth upon earth. The first birth happens when the Self that is destined to take birth upon earth as part of its karma enters the body of the father through food and water, and settles in his semen. The second birth takes place when he enters the mother’s womb through sexual union and becomes part of the fetus. Finally, he is born third time when emerges out of his mother’s womb after nine months and enters the mortal world¹.

The concept of transmigration of souls refers to how souls are reborn and how life on earth is a product of three births, rather than just one. While it is the mother that bears the child, it is not just her that bears the soul. The father, in his semen sac, also hosts some part of the soul before it is transferred to the mother².
