The Brahma Purana gives a detailed description of the seven continents, seven oceans and seven mountains in the cosmology of Hinduism. According to the text, the earth is divided into seven concentric islands (dvipas) separated by seven encircling oceans (samudras). Each island has a central mountain (parvata) and is divided into nine regions (varshas). The names and features of the seven continents, oceans and mountains are as follows: ¹²

- **Jambudvipa**: The innermost continent, named after the Jambu tree that grows there. It has Mount Meru as its central mountain and is divided into nine regions: Ilavrita, Bharata, Kimpurusha, Harivarsha, Ramyaka, Hiranyaka, Kuru, Bhadrasva and Ketumala. The inhabitants of Jambudvipa drink the juice of the Jambu fruits that flows as a river called Jambunadi. The ocean that surrounds Jambudvipa is called Lavana or the salt-water ocean.

- **Plakshadvipa**: The second continent, named after the Plaksha tree that grows there. It has Mount Mandara as its central mountain and is divided into nine regions: Siva, Yavasa, Subhadra, Santa, Kshema, Amrita, Abhaya, Sukha and Rama. The inhabitants of Plakshadvipa drink the juice of the Plaksha fruits that flows as a river called Plakshanadi. The ocean that surrounds Plakshadvipa is called Ikshu or the sugarcane juice ocean.

It has Mount Salmali as its central mountain and is divided into nine regions: Surocana, Saumanasya, Ramanaka, Devavritta, Paribhadra, Nandana, Kusala, Mahendra and Mandara. The inhabitants of Salmalidvipa drink the juice of the Salmali fruits that flows as a river called Salmalinadi. The ocean that surrounds Salmalidvipa is called Sura or the wine ocean.

It has Mount Kusha as its central mountain and is divided into nine regions: Kushala, Kochara, Mudita, Prabha, Manorama, Kusumoda, Mahodaya, Sarva and Madhu. The inhabitants of Kushadvipa drink the juice of the Kusha grass that flows as a river called Kushanadi. The ocean that surrounds Kushadvipa is called Sarpi or the ghee ocean.

It has Mount Krauncha as its central mountain and is divided into nine regions: Samara, Satyavrata, Vamadeva, Dhriti, Kusuma, Mahishmati, Mitravinda, Srutavati and Kapila. The inhabitants of Kraunchadvipa drink the milk of the Krauncha bird that flows as a river called Kraunchanadi. The ocean that surrounds Kraunchadvipa is called Dadhi or the yogurt ocean.
